The Fro got his hands on one before the official announcement. The way he handles it makes it look super light.

Pity that Nikon opted to send it to a "YT Influencer", rather than a more serious user/reviewer such as Ricci or Steve Perry.
Guess its a sign of the times.....:(

I'm guessing they picked him because he has a large following and has been critical of Nikon AF. Maybe they figured he'd be ideal since he wasn't a fan and would lend credibility? No idea, but maybe silencing a critic with a big audience was the strategy?

Of special note for those of us who are older, Nikon says not to use this lens if you have a pacemaker or other medical device. The magnets can cause problems.

You mean this lens delivers a double whammy - 1st infarction from the hefty price - and then to those who have recovered - a 2nd hit via the new AF system ;)

For what its worth - mini YouTube video - results do look impressive.

It is now officially announced:

In my mind, the big question will be if the IQ holds up when you add another 1.4x to it in its 560mm mode as many shoot a traditional 600 with a 1.4x converter.

Nikon's warning about pacemakers is self defeating. After seeing the credit card bill, many are going to need a pacemaker!!!

It may be better to couple the "native" 400mm with a 2xTC rather than stack TCs....or else opt for the new 800mm PF lens currently in development... ;)

My favorite comment heard so far was from someone who said that this would be his new walkaround lens, since he'd have to sell his car to buy it!!!

Yes, the 800PF could be an interesting lens, as long as the price isn't like the 400.

Steep price at $14K USD. How much will that impact adoption?

Walter, I agree with you. The only way I will ever likely see and use this lens is if I were to rent it for a specific need.

Yes on the 2XTC!

I tried the new TC2.0X on the 100-400 and it was pretty darn good at f11 and @800mm after I saw one of the Nikon videos where someone had done it. So if that is good the 400/2.8 with the 2X should be stellar at 800/5.6.

I'm not getting any younger and have had the 600VR/G since i came out which at 11+ pounds is getting to be a reason not to use it. Sold that and a few other items I no longer need and had 1/2 the money for the new 400. This will be a very versatile lens for me where I live since sometimes the 500pf is too much yet sometimes I can use more than 600. All in one lens and a converter in my pocket when/if needed.
