On the flip side may be a bit of a reduction from what I think will be a lack of a dedicated 1.4 converter which comes with the current 800 F5.6.  Having thought about it, I believe it will come in somewhere between $8,500 - $9,000.
Only 1/3 stop slower - f/5.6, f/6.3, f/7.1, f/8 ;)

The main parameter that correlates with price is front element diameter, the larger the front element the more work needed to make it from casting, grinding through to polishing.  I went and plotted lens price vs front element diameter using prices from B&H for lens starting with the 300mm f4 PF lens right through to the 800mm f5.6, for Nikon and Canon:

You can see names and prices on this plot:

Quite clearly front element diameter correlates quite well with lens price even for the PF lenses.  An 800mm f6.3 is 127mm diameter or more or less the same as a 500mm f4.  You can see that Nikon puts a premium on their 800mm lens, probably becuase it's low volume and they think they can can do so without hurting sales,

Good analysis, that's why my guess is the price will be $10K or more. I hope to be wrong on that though, Nikon has really found great wildlife niche lenses. I still wish they'd made a 600mmf5.6 PF though.

Thanks Scott, definitely would be useful, and should work out at a similar price to a 300mm f2.8.

Thanks for the (obvious ) correction EJ.   You can probably add another $500-$1,000 to my estimate as a result, lol !!!!!

I continue to agree with Scott.  A 600mm F5.6pf at a competitive price would be a top seller.

They'd sell a ton of them, although it might take a year or more to fill all the orders.

A short video with a pre-production model with Tom Mason. Note how he swings it around from the camera with one hand at about the 1:03 mark. I can’t believe that the mount didn't break. Must be fairly light!

Maybe purely co-incidental, but Nikon USA is selling refurbished 500/5.6 PF for $2499! I've bought refurbished gear from here, and aside from the limited warranty,  they are as good as new.

Yes, it's a touch below the line drawn through the 300m f4PF and 500mm PF alone so seems like a bit of a bargain really.
