New 800 f6.3 and 28-75 f2

Important to note that the 800 is a PF lens and is f/6.3 which will make this significantly smaller and lighter than the traditional 800/5.6 monsters.

Interesting, my first impression when I got the email from Nikon was that this 28-75 sure seems like it is the original Tamron 28-75 for Sony with a Nikon mount and rebadged (not the newer and better G2 version). Looks like DPReview feels the same way. If so, Nikon is charging a $300 premium over Tamron:

I can’t see any manufacturer making the beasts again. After shooting light super teles, I can’t imagine anyone wanting to carry such heavy lenses, aperture notwithstanding. It’s like an aluminum tripod vs. a carbon fiber tripod.

I did some loose measurements from the image, using the lens mount diameter as a reference, and the widest the 800mm gets is around 149mm by 380mm long. But those are pretty rough calculations.

I wonder if that's an indication of cooperation with 3rd party lens manufacturers? If so, that would certainly help Nikon build up their lens catalogue.

Couple that 800/6.3 with a Z9 (or a mirrorless D500) and I'm one happy birder. Just hope I'm still around to enjoy them

My wide estimate was for the widest part of the barrel. Personally, I’d kill for a 600mm f5.6. Nikon made a manual focus one many years ago, with a PF design, it would be a beauty. I’m not that interested in an 800 unless it has a reasonable minimum focus distance. The 19 foot minimum of the current model is too much for me.

+1. I'm with Scott. I currently have the Nikon D850 plus the 500mm F5.6 pf and I really like the combination.  However, I have owned the camera since it first came out and have a lot of activations so I'm thinking about whether to stick with a DSLR or make the switch to mirrorless.  A 600mm F5.6 pf lens would make my decision a lot easier towards the Nikon mirrorless.

On another blog site, someone made some calculations of the 800mm's size from the Nikon Z Lens Roadmap picture chart. Approximate size is 140mm x 314mm. For comparison, the Nikon F mount 500mm f5.6 pf is 106mm x 237mm.

Based on comparing the reduction of minimum focus distance between the 500mm f/4 to the 500mm f5.6 PF the minimum focus distance could be under 16' for a PF version of 800mm that is closing in on minimum focus distance of the 600mm f/4 of 14.4' with a 33% increase in reach. 
As said Z9 with this lens could be very interesting especially with TC's which work much better on mirrorless than messing around trying to calibrate them for DSLRs
PS - I have made the switch to mirrorless (Z7 and Z7II) and love the new lens design - I basically ditched all f-mount lens except 500mm f/5.6 PF and on wait list for Z9 - do miss action focus capabilities of my old D850's but looks like z9 will solve that problem - I hope, because outside the better focus capabilities of the D850 the Z7II is better in every way to the D850 and the new Z s-line lens are better than the similar f-mount

Me also.   (and the 100-400)...  My own expectations being January for the 100-400 at best, and Spring or early Summer on the Z9.  We'll see, but it won't cause any anxiety either way.

I ordered my Z9 with the 100-400mm too. It will be my first S lens and Z body. I am not in NPS so I have no idea when I will get it.

More on 100-400 from Brad Hill. Looks very good!!

I ordered Z9, 24-120, 100-400, FTZII. Have FTZII now, tomorrow both lenses arrive they were shipped to me Monday. NPS says my Z9 was shipped to my camera shop so I will have that next week. Good times ahead!
