Nikon Lens on Sony Camera.

After I sold my Nikon 500 f 5.6 at a good price I'm contemplating of buying it again.
It is cheaper now and I just love the light weight of it. Or would a lightweight Canon 100-500 be a better option?
I still have a Nikon D500 but I would rather would like to use it on a Sony a7R4 camera.
Any good adapter is out there which is reliable  and won't damage my camera?
I plan to sell my Sony 200-600, it is too heavy for me.
Thanks.

I know nothing about adapters for cameras... I would not have sold your D500... the 500pf is like no other, I know that
is blasphemy these days with everyone paying a lot of money to switch to Sony so they can post on Instagram....
I am happy to carry around a 500mm lens combo that weighs 5lb. total, a little more than the 200-600 alone...
I can take off the lens hood and put the D500 and 500pf in a large fanny pack...

Just by a Sony lens or you gonna sell the Nikon 500 again (may be with an adapter this time).

Thanks for your input. I have the Sony 200-600 and Sony 100-400 and the 1.4x and 2.0x TC. What else do you suggest based on your own your experience to buy. I also have the Nikon D500 and Nikon 300 f 4.0 PF ED VR and a 1.4x TC. The only missing part could be a Nikon 500 f 5.6 PF ED VR lens that I used to have and liked for it's lightness. At 78 lightness has become more important than IQ unfortunately.

Thanks, Dan. I kept it for a long time along with the Sony stuff and sold it for a price that just I have to add $150 and get a new one. Price went down on that lens.

The point is if you use a Sony camera, use Sony lenses or lenses that are designed for that system if you want great performance out of it.

Apparently you are having second thought on some of the lenses that you sold and bought in the recent past.

In case it's not clear, if it were me, I would buy neither the Nikon nor Canon for my Sony.

I agree AF with a Canon or Nikon lens will never work as good as a lens designed for the Sony mount.  If your looking for FAST AF performance on a Sony camera get a lens with a Sony mount, as a lens mounted with an adapter will always be slower.   For static subjects adapted lens work well as you don't need fast AF.

Karl, if you’re dead set on using the Sony camera, I can’t suggest anything. If you go back to the D500, I don’t think you can beat the combination of the D500, 300 f4 pf, 500 f5.6 pf and the TC 14e. Between those pieces, you’ve got a wide range of focal length options and two great lenses, plus a great camera for BIF. It’s a lightweight setup and I don’t think you can come close price wise in the Sony lineup. Everybody is rushing to MIL cameras, but I don’t see that many advantages over a DSLR other than silent shutter. I don’t see the need for fast frame rates unless you don’t mind editing and have plenty of hard drive space and memory cards to handle images you will probably never keep. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, at least not yet! When affordable, lightweight, quality lenses become more available, then I might suggest otherwise.

Thanks, Joe. I agree with you. 20 fps on my a9 II is way too much, 61 MP on my a7R4 is way too big for my computer.
When I was still having my D850 with the 500 f5.6 PF and posted pictures with both systems, Nikon and Sony, people always remarked that the
images taken with the Nikon looked nicer. I have no problems using two systems, I can switch in five minutes or less and feel confident. Both systems are good, Nikon seems to be cheaper a bit. I'll buy the 500 f5.6 PF regardless. My D500 has more that 100'000 actuations and it might die soon.

Hi Karl-I'm one of those hold-outs with Nikon D500 D850 , 500 5.6, 300 f/4. I was one of the people who thought the Nikon photos you posted were as good or better than you Sony shots. Now I'm seeing wonderful shots with Sony a9 or a7 with 100-400 plus TC. Isn't that combination pretty much the equivalent of the D500+ Nikon 500 5.6 or close to it? It would be interesting to compare with the D500 plus 500 5.6. I have no idea what the weight difference is....and I know nothing about Sony lenses, but I like what I see from your Sony shots.

You will not get reliable and fast AF that is good enough for anything but static or slow and predictable moving subjects with any adapter for Nikon lenses on Sony cameras. This is due to the nature of Nikon lenses. You will have much better luck with Canon lenses but it won't be anything remotely as good as a native lens.

Thank you all. No adapter. Cindy, I compared the weight of the D500+ 300 f4.0 PF +1.4x TC with the Sony a7R4 with the 100-400 lens and 1.4x TC. They are within 1 ounce difference. I don't have the 500 f5.6 PF right now but I assume it would be about 1/2 lb heavier than any of the two combo mentioned before.
The 200-600 is nice but very heavy for me (won't be for a younger person) that's the one I like to replace with the 500 f 5.6 PF.

One difference between these setups, regarding wildlife and bird photography, is that the Sony with the TC becomes an f8 aperture(long end) compared to f5.6 with the Nikon setup.

Karl, Re: weight, Nikon 300 f4 pf weighs 26.6 oz. (755grams) vs 51.2oz.(1460grams) for the 500 f5.6 pf.

I ended up buying the Nikon 500 f 5.6 PF lens again, I'm back where I was about a year ago; two system, like them both.
One day Nikon might come up with an affordable good quality mirrorless camera as well.
Thanks for the comments.
