I have received my new Canon R5 and really like it.  the AF seems to be everything the hype has promoted.  I do have what may seem like a silly question.  Upon shutdown the LCD screen shows a message telling me to be sure to put the lens cap on when the camera is turned off. Is this simply a "friendly reminder", or is there something about mirrorless tech which makes this important?  I know this sounds like a dumb question, so accept my apologies in advance.

On page 25 of the manual(Advanced User Guide) it says this:

“Do not leave a lens or a camera with a lens attached, exposed without the lens cap
attached. The lens may concentrate the light and cause fire.“

Hmmm! Interesting.  In all the years of photography I haven't seen this warning before.  It makes sense though.  In my profession I used to handle magnifying lenses and always cautioned patients to be sure they didn't have direct Sun shining through them unattended. Thanks for getting back to me.

Since there is no mirror in front of the shutter curtain in mirrorless cameras, the thin curtain could be burned by the magnifying effects of the sun through a lens.  The shutdown message is reminding you of that.  A lens cap on the lens (or a body cap on the body) would prevent that as a possibility, per the message.
Enjoy your R5.

The heat generated would probably not be good for the adhesives used to join the elements together in some lenses, as well as the plastic barrel on many lenses, e.g. the one in this article:

The camera isn’t the only thing at risk.
