Silly question.....when adding a Canon extender to a 5D should the extender be added to the camera 1st...then the lens added? Or should the extender be added to the lens 1st...then added to the camera. It seems to me I heard it matters on how the electronics function?

thanks,
D

If I remember the Canon manual correctly, put the extender on the lens first and then mount the combo on the camera next.

Yes, this is what I do.

It makes no difference which order you mount the converter/extender. It's recommended that you mount with the camera off. Once switched on the camera does not know what order things were mounted.

From the Canon User manual for 1.4x vIII TC and 2x vIII TC: (http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/8/030000465 ... iii-en.pdf)

"Mounting and dismounting the Extender
First attach the Extender to the lens, then attach it to the camera. To detach it, follow the same procedure in reverse."

From the 600mm  vII Canon User manual: (http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/2/030000765 ... m2-eng.pdf)

"Attach the extender to the lens, and then attach the lens to the camera. To remove it, reverse the order. Errors may occur if you attach the extender to the camera first."

FWIW  :)

I always attached the extender to the camera first, so the inside of the camera would be exposed to the shortest time. I never ever had any problem.
