Nikon D6

Yawn...It looks like more of a mid-cycle upgrade versus a new generation.

Rather lacklustre update - more like a wannabe D5s.
The D780 has a better array of novel features.
Don't see many rushing out to upgrade their D5's.

darn, I was hoping that everyone would rush out, buy a D6, and sell their D5's for a price I might be able to afford.

If the next generation D850 gets this new AF I'll be interested but this? Meh....
...or I'll wait for the pro model mirrorless that will compete with the Sony A9 II.

Nothing here to make me want to give up my D5. I can't imagine the new autofocus system is that much better than the D5 to justify $6500.

Better by having less AF points in smaller area ?

So are you saying just buy a D 5 for $5500 if you need either the D 5 or D 6?

Exactly. The AF on the D5 (especially the 3d tracking) was a huge jump over the D4.  I can't fathom that the D6 is that much better.

I took some time, since I am traveling to absorb this camera and my conclusion is that this offers essentially nothing new to the Nature Photographer. There are basically two areas where this camera is new, a new AF system that offers fewer points but slightly more cross-type points in the same narrow center AF zone. It does enhance face detect a bit with a pseudo eye detect in normal through the viewfinder shooting but since that is also clustered in the middle, it is almost useless unless you like the eye of your subject in the AF point zone. It's also only for humans. The other major improvement is purely for news service photographers with it's ability to speed up image transfer to the wire services. Built in GPS is nice but again, not even remotely worth the upgrade price. My conclusion is that if you have a D5 and love it, there's no reason whatsoever to upgrade what looks like a half step using a 5 year old sensor. If you don't like your D5, you aren't going to like the D6 much better. I can't think of one single reason why a Nature Photographer would buy this camera.

Interesting article.  If most feel the D6 is a disappointment then the D5 will be a bargain while they last.

I think they’d be taking a lot less flack if they’d called it the the D5s.
