I guess they want to stem the flow to Sony by this development announcement.

The specs really address the major issues with the original R for still nature photographers - low frame rate and hopefully eliminate the staccato evf issues. Will see about the AF capabilities - but hopeful. Can't wait to use this camera with my great EF lenses and accessories. Not all that interested in the video side.

I imagine 8K video will be extremely crippled. Such as maybe no AF and low bit rate, otherwise you have a 30fps camera at 33MegaPixels or so. Already the stills specs equal the 1DxIII on speed, so the AF must be insuperior (as DPixel AF already is over PDAF, certainly for speed). I imagine rolling shutter will be an issue that renders 20fps shooting pointless, for anything but snails ;) but at least we have 2 card slots (1 of which must be CFExpress to handle 8k 30fps or 4k 120fps). Could be a very interesting camera.

On the other hand I am not quite sure about lenses that top out at f7.1, just becasue the sensor can focus at small apertures does not mean the lens should follow suit.

Live view focussing on the 1DxIII looks pretty awesome however... :o I think the example I saw was a "FroKnows" video.

Canon announcing a new 100-500 lens plus  a new camera is too little too late . Last November I made the switch to Sony By getting a crop sensor camera and 200-600 lens  One can use both tele extenders 1.4 & 2.0 with this rig. The can't be done with a Canon. I got sick of canon producing so many 100-400 mm lens with a built in teleconverter.  When they killed the idea of producing a 100-600 lens that was the last straw for me a wild life photographer. Plus many of the Sony a7 11 thru a 7 mk 4 can be changed to crop sensor as the need arises. One Would have to purchase a high end pro canon camera for $ 5000 plus to get the picture quality of a run of the mill Sony

Canon Australia has issued an official press-release on this camera confirming some info.  It also claims animal eye AF for birds - a game changer if it works!

Whilst my lowly old i7 PC will melt trying to edit 8K footage the option of extracting stills at 30fps wioth animal eye AF might be appealing (providing compression isn't a crippling factor). Not sure if 4K video is in fact full frame though?

Despite the video, a 12/20 fps camera which must have at least 36 MP does sound interesting. I am already quite happy with the IQ of the 5D4, a little less so with the R, but if they match the IQ then this could be nice indeed.

Wondering how overheating will be handled though (record limit?)

An extracted still off of a 30FPS video will be shot at 1/60s - it simply will not be sharp. You will need to wait until there's 8K at 240FPS at least before you are going to get real sharp still frames from 8K video.

Not if you are shooting with a mind to extract stills, rather than video. That said the R5 should be shooting RAW at 20fps and I am sure the 8k video will not be 10bit H265 or anything close.... or will it?

Exactly, shooting the R5 videos for stills you can crank the SS to whatever you want pull out a 30+mp file shot at 30fps silent :)

Video specs are looking better and better. 8K RAW internally :o No idea what kind of beast PC you need to edit that though ;)

But finally having H265 10-bit codec for 4K will do nicely especially for the 120fps mode (with AF!).

Best one for me is a proper AF joystick! Still keeping pixel count a secret, for whatever reason.

You will need some very large, very expensive memory cards to do 8K RAW for more than a very short amount of time. My question is how are they going to manage heat buildup...

That is why I would not buy one for a good while and I wonder how you keep the body weather sealed while drawing the heat out (I believe there is no fan in the body).
