I have a Canon 1D MKIV body. Does anyone have experience with a Canon body and the Nikkor 500/5/6 lens. Is that combination possible and how does the lens function with that body type.
Thanks

It is possible to mount a Nikon lens on a Canon body and there are adapters that were designed for the Nikon 14-24 when Canon had no competitive lens. However it will be manual focus and it can only be shot wide open at f/5.6 since there is no way to get a Canon body to control Nikon's electronic aperture. Basically it isn't a viable option. Again, as in your previous threads, if you want a good shooting experience with another system, you will need to buy another system and no amount of jury-rigging or adapters will get you a satisfactory wildlife experience with super telephoto lenses on different camera manufacturer's camera bodies.

Why is Canon so far behind other camera and lens companies when it comes to offering light weight bodies and telephoto lenses

I know that's a rhetorical question... ;)

There are some new Canon mirrorless bodies coming this year to fill in the line-up but not long telephoto lenses for some time based on their roadmap.  Note that Canon does have a light(ish) telephoto lens for DSLRs in the EF 400mm f/4 DO II IS as well as the now very old 400mm f/5.6.  But no light long lenses longer than that.  But then again their new 500/4 and 600/4 weigh dramatically less than the older lenses do.

Yes, version III of the 500 f/4 is very light, coming from someone who lugged around a version 1 for 10 years.

... also a 5D Mk IV weighs a lot less than a 1D Mk IV... Combining a 5D Mk IV with the latest model of 500 f/4L would cut your current weight in half. Alternately, combining a D500 and the 500PF would cut it down to about 1/3 and cost a lot less money than a 500 f/4 + 5D4.... If you are married to full frame, I would look at the new D780 and a 500PF for similar weight and better noise performance than a D500 + 500PF. Another option would be the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk II or E-M1X coupled with their 300mm f/4 (600mm equivalent f/4 for light, f/8 for DOF due to 2x crop factor)

Just curious Richard, did you rent the Sony system (ie. A9 or A6600 and 200-600mm) and decide you didn't like it?

Hi Rich, If you want to get that 500mm lens (I have one and love it), why don't you just go ahead and just pickup a D500 for $1500 and just leave that on there? I realize $1500 isn't "nothing" but if you are investing in that lens I think you'd get a lot more out of it with a Nikon body. That would be like a 750mm field of view in a super light weight package.  I have it but tend to use the D850 in full frame mode for 500mm fov or in crop mode for the 750mm fov.  95% of the time I use it in full frame mode and then crop if needed rather than switch modes as memory is so cheap these days.

Yeah, I did mention that combo above or the new D780 + 500PF for even less money and still full frame at 24mp with exceptional high ISO performance and basically the same AF system...

Great advice. The D500/D850+500PF is probably the single most compelling light-weight, compact birding rig for serious shooters available today. For better results, you're going to have to spend a LOT more and deal with a lot more weigh as well.
