Anyone have any experience with this lens?  In the interest of reducing the rig weight I'm looking for a zoom to cover the 35-70 range in an f4.0 version rather than the 2.8's I've been using.  The Digital Picture site it doesn't look too bad at f8 which is probably where I'd use it most.  I wish Sigma made one!  Open to suggestions too. My guess is that it isn't very good. Thanks,  Jim

I don't think it is anywhere near the imaging standards that would get the most out of a D850, Even back on the D3x which had half the resolution this lens design was strained. That said, it is a super versatile lens and as long as you don't need to get large print resolution out of it, it can be a decent choice. An alternative is the Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art which is a bit more modern of a lens.

I missed that Sigma E.J. Thanks. I'll have a look at it. Jim

It was designed for the 12MP FX D3. Great "convenience" lens for the time. My interest in it ended when I bought a D800.

Suggestions? The Z7+24-70/4S kit lens. There's no comparison.

Thanks Gary, I've been Canon for 20 years and only recently switched back to Nikon so I'm not as familiar with their lineup but suspected it was old. Appreciate it.

I have the Sigma 24-105 Art lens and I'm very happy with it.
IQ is very good. It is a heavy lens though, weighs about 2.0 lb.
I use it on a D850 for landscape and people photography.

I'm a 24-120 fan. When I bought a D750, the 24-120 came with it at a bargain price. I've had a Nikon 24-70 for more than 10 years but find myself using the 24-120 most of the time. It's sharp, 200g lighter, offers VR and the extra reach is very handy at times. And I've read all of the negative stuff that you've read so go figure.

Big difference between a 24 megapixel camera and a 46mp camera ;)  The 24-120 is OK, not great but still pretty reasonable on a 24mp camera but it's pointless spending $3200 on a D850 and then putting a lens on it that can't even fully resolve 24mp on that camera.  But yes, the versatility is great.

E.J. what would you recommend for D850...Nikon's own 24-70 f2.8??

Also, is Sigma Art 35 f1.4 good enough for the D850

Nikon's 24-70/2.8 is good, not great.  you can save a ton of money and get nearly identical IQ by going with the G2 version of the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8.

Sigma's Art 35/1.4 is the best 35mm AF lens available in F-mount.

I have the 24-120 F:3.5-5.6 VR and it is one of my sharpest lenses. When I use it on fall landscape shots I barely have to sharpen the final image. I use it on a D600 and D810. Before I got those 2 cameras I took a shot of my nephews 1 year boy with a D300s and its so sharp and detailed I can zoom in and count each eyelash without losing detail.

I'm quite happy with the Tamron 17-35 you recommended previously and will probably end up with this one to go with it.  The weight difference isn't enough to worry about and the extra stop might come in handy.  Thanks.  Jim
