Since you don't need to demosaic a monochrome camera, the resolution is significantly higher since each pixel represents the exact light that that pixel saw, the final file does not apply an algorithm of what the color might be based on nearest neighbors. This has the effect of reducing resolution by about 30% of what the sensor is actually capable of. It also eliminates moire.
