Having seen some image samples I am quite impressed with the IQ considering Canon's past APS-C sensors.

It's definitely not a bad little camera in the right conditions.

I still hope they will give us a 7D III though ;-)

Thanks, Glenn, for the review. I've been looking for a review by someone like you.

Your comment about its use at higher ISOs give me pause in purchasing this camera.

Sorry if I missed it in your review, but how does it do in AF tracking?

Mark

I havent done much flight shooting. But I'd expect it to be similar to the 7D series.

Sorry I cant say for sure.

Thanks Glenn. I was wondering if this camera could replace my 5 year old 7DII. I need better autofocus (accuracy & tracking) and better handling of shadows at high ISO. The 90D does not address any of those. The two back-button options for AF are a great feature but I wish you could track/change AF points with the rear screen.

I've trying Nikon, with a D500 & 500/5.6 combo. Really nice to carry and the AF is miles ahead of the 7DII. Even with the 1.4x extender image quality remains outstanding wide open but the focusing speed and flexibility takes a big hit. My biggest issue is muscle memory! When taking the lens or converter off/on I still try to move it the Canon way.

Maybe we should get excited that some of the features of the 1DxIII will trickle down to a 7DIII?

Agree with all you said!

Sure hope we get a 7D III before the full switch over to mirror-less goes down.

Cheers!

I'm in the same boat regarding an upgrade/replacement of my 7d2 for better AF accuracy & tracking, handling of shadows and noise. I had a chance to try the 90D vs my 7d2 on a recent festival for nature photography. There's a lot to like with the 90D as for the improvements of the sensor, cropping capabilities, macro, video etc. Shadow handling definetely is much improved and I don't see a 1 to 1.3 worse noise either. In my short tests noise is about the same compared to the 7d2 at native sizes and a bit better if you downsize the files to the dimensions of the 7d2. Beyond that, the noise is a bit more even and not as blotchy as the one of the 7d2. I didn't test it above ISO 1600, though There was no chance to test the tracking AF for BIF there and I just tried it on some cars quickly passing on a street nearby using my 100-400 II. For the most part it worked pretty good in these simple scenarios but I got the impression that the 7d2 still is superior here - that's to say the AF is quicker and can keep up with fast moving subjects somewhat better. I also missed the option of 4 surrounding AF points while the 8 points of the 90D evidentally just give the camera the priority to decide similar to the zone settings. Of course, there was no chance for scientific tests there, but I decided to stay with my 7d2 despite the goodies of the 90D -mostly because the AF of the 90D is not quite on the same level for fast moving subjects - though the 7d2 is not always reliable and accurate in bursts either. It's really a pity that they didn't combine the improvements of the 90D with the body and an upgraded AF of the 7d2. For stationary objects the AF of the 90D for the most part does the job, though. But as said, it's no full replacement of the 7d2 AF-wise, IMO.
Of course, I also talked to the CPS regarding the chance of a 7d3. As expected they didn't (or couldn't) give a perpective here. They just said that the market will decide. "If the 90D will be successful as it looks at present there could be the chance of the 7d3" (quote). I personally doubt that there will be a 7d3, though. They also had the 1DXIII but you couldn't put your hands on it. The camera will get a new option to quickly change the AF field for following the subject via the AF-button which might be a good thing.

I'm surprised Canon came out with the 90D and M6 II cameras. Honestly feel that the 90D was a quick, low cost update for Canon. Aside from the new sensor there is nothing new and they have stopped investing in any kind of advanced technology (better focusing, combo live view/optical viewfinder, etc.) related to DSLRs. Maybe that is not true with all the bells and whistles of the new 1DXIII but I'm not too hopeful that will trickle down to a 7DIII.

I do like the Canon's M6II for my macro work but was expecting an M5II. Clearly launching an M5II at the same time as the 90D would be not be good marketing strategy. But then again I never understand most of Canon's marketing strategies.
