I have 2 old lenses - the AF-S VR ED200-400/4G and the AF-S VR ED300/2.8.
Both are still sharp but now have developed a squeak while auto focusing.
Is it expensive to repair?
I still love the 300 but can do without the 200-400.

Thanks for help

The squeak may go away if the lenses are used more often ...
My AF-S300/4D ED does that from time to time but it's still going strong for all these years.

Agreed !

Some of my lenses squeak, too, but it's gone once I've started using them more often again.

The squeak can also mean that the AF motor is failing.

I had a squeak in my 200-400VR at one time. Sent it in to Nikon for cleaning and maintenance and came back squeak free and like new. I understand that the lubricants do degrade over time so maintenance is a good idea.

Have both of them and used it for many years ( 10+ years ) . Both these lens had the auto focus motor fail once I heard the squeaking noise.
At least the 300 F.28 I got it fixed and it works. But the 200-400 ( first generation ) was not repairable. Not only the auto focus motor failed but the inter barrel was also deformed. ( FYI. I have never dropped this lens ) and they don't have spares globally. I was expecting these to last a lifetime. -:) .
If possible please send in and get it cleaned or fixed if needed.

I have a second generation 70-200 f2.8 VR lens with a squeak and when I did the paper work online, Nikon estimated my repair to be about 600.00 to repair a failing auto focus motor. The cost of the repair is the approximate market value of the lens so I decided to keep the lens and use it until the motor failed and then replace with a newer version.

The infamous "AF-S squeek" of early AF-S modules is not necessarily a sign of imminent failure. If you're planning on keeping the lenses "forever" you could contact Nikon to see if they still have parts available, but I expect the cost could be high relative to the current value of the lens. Personally, I'd just ignore it and keep shooting.

Thanks everyone for replies - appreciated
I decided to send in the 300 as it’s a lens I still use occasionally and love the sharpness.
It can’t hurt to get the lens checked out, cleaned, etc.
The 200-400 I’m still not sure about.
I don’t really use it (other lighter lenses have taken its place) but if it squeaks it’s not a lens anyone would buy if I tried to sell.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

That's why you should start using it again. Just shoot something with it, anything. Get the parts moving. You can even do it at home. Then you'll find out if it has a serious problem as some think it has.
