EOS RP Firmware Version 1.3.0

Firmware Version 1.3.0 incorporates the following enhancement:
1. Enhances eye detection Auto Focus (AF) for improved face and eye recognition at greater distances.
2. Improved Auto Focus (AF) performance helps the camera to focus on and track smaller subjects.
3. Reduces lag time between the actual Auto Focus (AF) and the AF frame display for images in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
4. Fixes a phenomenon in which Main dial icon may not appear when magnify/reduce button is pressed during the image playback.
5. Fixes PTP communication vulnerability.

NB There is a similar f/w update for the EOS R too.

FInally! I am going to be testing an EOS R and was waiting for improved AF. Would have been nice if Canon could, you know, add focus stacking as they have on the RP. Wouldn't want to put all the best features in to the more pricey body would we? :|

It's weird that they didn't implement focus stacking stacking yet on the EOS R since the lower end camera has it

I just wonder what they are thinking? Sure put the best features on a higher priced body... but the one sensor Canon has capable of landscape and macro is not the one in the RP :( My mind boggles.

Well there is certainly an improvement on eye detection and not losing the eye with 1.4.0. Overall AF seems a bit snappier too.

No camera is perfect.
I've owned the EOS RP since 01 Jul 2019 and am impressed by its image quality and ergonomics (better than the EOS R IMHO).
Forget about image sensor DR as it doesn't come into the equation when shooting 'normally'.

Now with the latest Sep 2019 AF update it'd be even more enjoyable using this camera for portraiture.
You can be confident in getting your subject's (human) eye tack sharp when shooting with fast telephotos such as 85/1.4 and 135/2.

I would not pretend to know what normal shooting is, but I have loved the IQ of the 5D4 since it was released and the "high enough" pixel count makes it perfectly at home for landscapes and wildlife. My only qualms, as usual with Canon, are always the missing bits. We can work around them of course. :)

I tested drive the RP with supertelephotos for BIF last week; that was before the f/w update ...
It's doable but not the tool I'd use for this kind of action shots. My old 7D beats it here.
If you're interested you can view some of the test shots at https://www.flickr.com/photos/169408738 ... 1042716087

Also for some reasons Servo AF is more reliable when shooting through LV/LCD rather than EVF which I'd have preferred. The other thing is Focus Preset doesn't work with both my EF600/4L USM and EF500/4L IS USM. They are of older generation though ...
