E.J.   Awhile back you had given the method to darken area around crop in viewfinder.  I had an accident and had to switch from D800 to D810 (insurance) and now would like to set the viewfinder up as I had the D800.  HCarl

Oh wow, I don't have those cameras anymore but it was some arcane thing in the autofocus point viewfinder illumination section of the custom functions. I think it's in menu item a5 - try the various settings there.

On page 76 of the manual, it says to select “off” in custom setting a6. It is also shown on page 310.

OK I was off by one number - not bad for not having owned those cameras for several years :)

Thanks for reply E.J. I was happy I remembered that it was you that posted that adjustment years ago. The d810 is all the camera I will probably have for the rest of my pictures taking years unless I win the Lottery. I don't see any improvement in the images coming out of all the new models but would like a D500 so maybe in the future. hcarl

The D810 is the best Nikon camera I ever owned, actually the best 35mm DSLR I ever owned.  It should serve you well for a long time.

Do you think it’s better than the D850? You only said “I’ve ever owned”, but I don’t remember if you owned a D850. Just curious, since some like Thom say the D850 is the best DSLR ever made.

To be correct, Thom says it's the best all-around DSLR.  He also says others are better for certain things.  FWIW, I have a D810 and D850 and I am confident that the D850 is the better camera.  The D810 is a good camera, no doubt, but the D850 AF is much better and it handles higher ISO better.  It also takes noise reduction better at those higher ISOs.  The downside to the D850 is that it is very unforgiving of sloppy technique.  The high pixel density makes little problems very apparent and it does require the best glass.  When they first came out, I heard of someone who got one from the first batch, put a 28-300 on it and proclaimed it wonderful.  Point being it's a matter of personal taste, so YMMV.

True. Here’s a link to his review of the D850 and comparisons to previous models and performance in different areas:

As you noted, I said it's the best 35mm DSLR I've ever owned.  I have not owned a D850 but have used it plenty and it is of course a superior camera. My point was only that the D810 is a phenomenal camera with impeccable image quality and since he said that it will be the last one he likely ever owns, he made a great choice.

Thanks for clarifying, E. J. It is far superior to my 9 year old D700. I’ve been considering the D850 and that’s why I asked.

I have seen lots  of prints made from the D500 and up to the size my P800 printer will do they are excellent.  I only base my opinion of image quality on what I see on a print and not what I see on the internet. With my D810 I am able to crop quite a bit and still produce excellent prints but not sure how much cropping would be able to be done with a D500 image.  hcarl
