I'm going to be taking a vacation to Chile in July (winter). My wife purchased a D850 for me. I only have a couple FX lenses. Nikon 70mm - 200mm f/2.8 and a Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.4G Lens. I have several DX lenses. The two most relevant are Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II and a Sigma 10mm - 20mm f/4 - 5.6.

I expect to do primarily landscape and street photography. I want to travel light. I'm considering the 18-200, 10-20 and 35 and leaving the 70-200 home. Any thoughts?

Thank you,

~ Doug

I apologize if I posted this in the wrong area.

You posted in the right area.  I've been to Chile many times - choice of equipment depends on where you are going...?

We'll visit Easter Island.Valle de la Luna and the Atacama Desert, Santiago,
Valparaiso, Chiloe Island. It will be winter and we expect a full moon. Most of our time will be on Easter island.

OK, the DX lenses that you have could be used but it seems a waste to put those on a D850 as you will be using a relatively low end crop sensor consumer lens on a very high end full frame body. You might consider renting a 24-70 to go with your 70-200. Anything less and you might as well leave the D850 behind and take a much lighter and smaller DX camera body that is more matched to your lenses. A trip of such magnitude deserves to have the coverge that you need to get some great photos IMHO. An alternative would be to rent something like a Z6 or Z7 and the 24-70 f/4 slong with your 70-200 on an FTZ adapter - that would be a lighter kit than the D850 without the IQ compromises of the lower end lenses coupled with a heavy high end body.

Ideally, you would take something like super wide zoom, a 24-70 and 70-200 and something even longer for the nuerous wildlife opportunities you will have but of course that all adds up quickly.

Thank you very much. I'll see what one of the lens rental companies has. I really appreciate your advice. Sounds like I may have a lens rental and a TC rental in my future.

If you really want to travel light, the D850 + FF dSLR lenses isn't the best way to go.

I'd recommend a mirrorless system, something like the Sony A6400 + 18-135 will handle most of the travel camera requirements in a very lightweight package.
