Nikon released an update for the D500, but be sure to read the comments after the article on DPReview.

Typical Nikon stupid software where they expect an error on the first running which you then need to do a reinstall to correct.  A smart software designer wouldn't let this happen to begin with but even if he/she had to do to time constraints or whatever, you simply insert a line of code that says "If error XXX then restart installation" - that completely insulates the user from this idiocy and eliminates literally thousands of customer service contacts.

OMG...  Much of a do about nothing.   I did that update yesterday.  Camera melted and became a mush of water and smoking electrics.   Nah!

All Nikon were doing is highlighting an issue from those that Haven't done previous updates from versions 1.00 to 1.12 so have identified some glitches that may then occur.  No idea how or why someone would not have done the previous updates but hey, not into scare mongering.

The key words here seem to be which order you put in Idiocy and User.

Now here's the thing.   :D   You'll never be able to deny the general public from being idiots.  It is their right!!   Program that into software and it'll blow the hard drive.
Make your life spectacular!

I always recommend that you wait a week and monitor the internet forums for any issues or in case the manufacturer pulls the update.

I wish Nikon would do decent firmware updates like Fuji - and more recently Sony.
Focus shift would be a really handy addition!
