Because it’s not built-in to the camera and, therefore, not as convenient as a pop-up.

Guess low light close distance AF is no longer an issue :-)

Xenon flash has a CRI of about 100 whereas few LED's are much more than about 94 and most are closer to 80. Additionally, Xenon tubes can be as much as 50% efficient at turning electrical energy into light whereas LED's are not that efficient. Of course, an LED flash unit could be smaller and less expensive so I suspect it will dominate on-camera built in flash units.

I think the idea is to provide a continuous light source for video, primarily. I have no knowledge of the output they may intend to produce, but this type of flash is not anything we will see anytime soon in a real camera.
