These are high quality filters with thin mounts and Zeiss T coating:

Interesting that they are comparing against their previous line with 2x more resolution. I wonder if they are using breakthrough? What material is the ring made of?.

Certainly the ring would be aluminum. The T coating is what gives it the optical improvement, I’m sure. I have used Zeiss eyeglass lenses and coatings and have observed a distict improvement over lesser coatings and glass.

This lists the ring as made of aluminum:

https://www.adorama.com/iso62cp2.html

Many Sony polarizing filters I see on B and H and Adorama list “none” under coatings or only “multicoatings”:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... rizer.html

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... ilter.html

Even Sony’s listing doesn’t show T coating on older filters:

https://www.sony.com/electronics/camera-lenses-filters/vf-72cpam

The glass formulation probably has a lot to do with quality of image, as well.

Regarding their claim: If you read Sony’s footnote, it says “Depends on model and focal length of lens attached”:

You are right Joe...seems to be a mix of older Minolta filters, old Sony filters, and the new ones. One of my old Sony filters did have the T coating (probably a re named Zeiss.)

It’s odd that Sony lists it as having the T coating, but B&H shows it as having none:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/530076-REG/Sony_VF_49CPAM_49mm_Circular_Polarizing_Glass.html

The Sony description may be for the new model, since it also mentions the slim filter design.

It's actually called the T* coating. Sony lenses that are cobranded with the Zeiss name also have these coatings. I wonder if these filters are just Sony branded versions of the filters Zeiss has been selling for a very long time.

Here’s a bit more on the meaning and origin of the name:

https://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2 ... -t-coating

Note: The links in that article don’t work.
