I am looking to purchase a compact camera that I can stick in my pocket and use for travel. I was looking at the Sony RX100Vl but I am told that it is not compatible with LR or PS. Comments and suggestions from those of you using  small compacts would be appreciated.

It's compatible. I was looking at that camera as well. Also, some of the Panasonic's aren't bad. I bought a Panasonic ZS50 at Costco for $300.00 and use to carry it on my belt. People were always asking me what kind of camera I used when they saw photos I posted on facebook. They all thought I was using some expensive dslr. It wasn't that good in low light though.

If you want to be able to photograph things further away (ie. wildlife), then the RX100vi is the one to get.  I use my Sony RX100s more for people and indoors where light is low and things are close.  I got the RX100mi when it was first introduced, then the model iii and most recently got the model va, even though the VI was already out since I prefer having the greater aperture and wider point of view of the smaller lens.  You might also consider the Lumix LX100mii, it has a bigger sensor.
