A new review of this lens that many would overlook as a common lens:

The fundamental problem with this lens is the price. Normally the "nifty-fifty" or the 50mm f/1.8 lenses are priced around 1/4 of this one.

One of the problems Nikon has with pricing is that at present they only have two camera bodies that can use the lens and those two cameras are very new so not many are in the field.  In addition, many owners of the Z's can use the adapter and an existing 50mm lens.  The consequence is a potentially low volume which necessarily increases unit price.  Still, $600 is a good deal above there other 50mm f/1.8 lenses and pricing it as they have will probably mean fewer sales which further lowers margins.  Something of a catch-22.
