This should answer your question on normal vs sport kinda like VR light.

As a side track, you mentioned both D500 and D7200.
Wonder if there is any reason(s) you still keep the D7200 for your wildlife body?
Is it to do with better file image quality or just a backup?
I only keep my D7200 as an emergency backup to the D500 in case some disaster strikes the D500.  I've taken maybe 20 photos with it since I bought the D500 2 years ago :)  One of the reason I do look at lenses with the D7200 is because it has the highest pixel density of any Nikon camera so it is really good at testing resolution within the confines of the APS-C sensor area.  I actually use an a7R III to test Nikon lens resolution with the full frame.

One of the cool things about the D850 (or D810 for that matter) is the various crop modes.  There is an APS-H crop mode that gives you about 30 megapixels with a 1.25 crop which can be really good for wildlife.

Walked around a neighborhood pond this morning with the lens in Sport VR and just hand holding. Wow, this lens is going to be fun. Excellent sharpness even as slow as 1/125 in deep shade.

Check out this one from this morning, hand held D500 and 500pf, VR sport mode.

Had a split second to bring the lens up to my eye and fire off 2 shots, this was one. Lens is fast and hand holding allowed me to be quick enough to catch this. Could be better but I am loving this lens!

Thanks for the detailed and very informative review of the new Nikon 500 f 5.6 lens.
Many of the information can be applied to other lenses as stated and as a newcomer to Nikon I appreciate every bit of information.
Thanks, E.J.

Thanks EJ for a fine review of this great lens!  I do have one comment.  I don't think that the Kirk replacement foot is the "only replacement foot available at this writing".  One can use the RRS replacement foot for the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E FL  (LCF-11). RRS recommended this to me for the 500mm f/5.6 lens (though they haven't updated their website) and it is the one I have been using. This is actually slightly longer than the Kirk replacement foot and seems to better tighten by hand than the original Nikon foot, decreasing the possibility of accidentally releasing the foot.  In addition, other's have reported using a replacement foot from Hejnar for the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8E FL though I have not tried this replacement foot.  This foot is unique in that it has a screw that actually screws into the collar, this would prevent the rapid release of the foot but would provide added protection against an accidental release of the foot.

Stick some gum under the release switch

Thanks, when I went to the RRS site when I wrote this nothing came up when looking up that lens so they aren't or at least weren't marketing it for that lens.  But yes, in theory any foot made for the 70-200E should work since it's an identical mechanism.  the only question then would be if whatever 70-200 replacement foot is used is long enough to balance the 500.

I did not even check Hejnar because it was my understanding which could be incorrect that they no longer market their products to US customers.  I have used their medium format stuff in the past.

There is a slight error/brain fade in the review that I wrote.  I wrote Nikon 100-400 when I meant 80-400.  Unfortunately I will not be able to correct this error until I get back home in a week.

Thanks for your excellent review, EJ!
Only if the 500PF with TC14E III and D500 works well for BIF shoot I'd be sold!

I should be able to test that over the next month or so.
