2lb less is pretty significant. They also went to the new optical design that puts elements closer to the camera allowing them to use less glass, reduce weight and shift the weight back making it easier to balance. But they haven't been released just yet, only announced. They can't be preordered for another week and won't be shipped until the very end of the year. Price is $12K and $13K respectively :o

It is unclear except for weight as to whether this lens is an improvement over version II. I think weight is a matter of whether you are trying to hand hold or not. On a tripod, weight can add to stability. Physical size for travel seems a tossup. Upgrading to me is not a no brainier. Would like to see some trusted hands on reviews of the 600.

Optical formula between the Sony and Canon 400 are a bit different but the control ring, weight loss, and moving center of gravity back on both lenses seem to be pointing to a little industrial espionage. Could we have a patent infringement going forth or do you think they are cooperating with each other?
