I am thinking of dumping the 24-70 and replacing it with the 24-104 lens. This would give me a continuous range from 16-400mm for three lens. Is the a good idea? All would be used on a7Rlll.

You didn't say which 24-70. If it's the f/4 then you won't give up anything in IQ and gain in versatility. If it's the f/2.8 then you will give up a bit in IQ in favor of versatility. But among the 24-105's out there from Canon, Sigma, and now Sony, this is the best of the bunch by a little bit.

I haven't used the 24-70 f/2.8 but find the 24-105 far exceeds my version of the 24-70 f/4.  I think the 24-105 is amazing (I use the A7R III too).
Cheers,
Doug

I used that zoom combo with my Canon kit, once upon a time, and found it to be a nice walk around lens. I think a replacement of my 24-70 f4 would be worthwhile.

On a related topic, I'll be putting the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 through it's paces next week!

28-75 is weird range. What is the driver for those unusual focal ranges (another example of an unusual range is the Tokina 11-16)?
Cheers,
Doug
