Looks impressively small at 38.7cm long (My 300 f2.8 is 26.5cm).

It's 24cm long, the 38.7 is for the regular f/4 lens

Wonder if the 500 will have teething problems like the 300.

Are the 300PF's teething problems an occasional one-off or do all of them still suffer optical stabilisation probs at certain shutter speeds from time to time? I've steered clear of it for this reason.
Seems sensible to let the early adopters give the 500PF the "once over" for a time before considering adding it to the stable.

If the price isn't too high, I bet this will be a very popular lens.

This was only an issue with "some" of the earlier models. This is not an issue with newer models. I have one myself and know at least three other people with this lens and it is not a problem. I am sure Nikon learned from that issue with the 300 PF and the newer PF lenses will not have the same problem.
