EJ,

Based on these comments, what would you suggest as the best method to ensure consistent results and planarity?

Thanks

Bob

[tr][td][table][tr][td]Of all of the different ways I have focus calibrated thousands of lenses, by far the least reliable method is Focal. The fundamental flaw with it is that there is no way to absolutely guarantee lens/ target planarity. It is also EXTREMELY sensitive to the light source being used and can give you wildly different results between different light sources or if using a mixed light source.

I can't read that Bob. You can not paste formatted text... ;)

But - the Lens align II (I prefer the long ruler version) has a sighting system that insures planarity if used properly.

I too use the Lens Align II. I gave up with Focal ages ago.

Has anyone tried the “dot tune” method? I’ve never calibrated my af before, and this sounds logical enough. . . .

Dot Tune sounds great - but it is very unreliable and inconsistent. A few swear by it, but many, many posts in various photo sites come to same conclusion: unreliable and inconsistent. I wish it was a good method because it is relatively easy.

That was sorta OK in the 12 megapixel era and not even that good then.  In a high megapixel era it's a fools errand at best.
