Too bad the price could be higher than I would like to pay for even though the weight reduction could be significant for my liking. Like others, if it's $6K I would like it to be a 600mm :-)
Same here . . . . . and remember $6K in the US is going to be $8K here in Canada :(

And I paid about $8K for my 500 f4. It would be crazy for me to pay the same amount for a 500 f5.6.

Exactly . . . . . I paid $7800 + taxes for my 500 f4 VR. I guess I am dreaming too much, but I honestly expected a 500 or 600 f5.6 PF to be about twice the price of the 300 PF, which would be in the $4K to $5K in CAD$.

Nikon Rumors has some "info" on price and dimensions.

If it's really 24cm long then my 246mm length prediction is pretty much right on :)  Their price prediction is too low IMHO.

If the lens is sharp, has a pro AF motor, is weather sealed, and the priced around $4000 (+/- a bit), I will pre-order something through NPS for the first time.
Between the air travel with increasingly tight weight restriction and my aging knees that pay the price on long hikes, a 500mm pf would be a near ideal solution for what and how I like to shoot.

The Canon 400mm f4 DO II comes in at over €6k so I would expect a 500mm 5.6 with similar technology to be around that too. The Canon is quite amazing, even with a TC, I expect big things from the Nikon.

The 400 DO needed at least a 100mm objective lens. It's specs indicate that it's case is 128mm in diameter. It is also 232mm long and 2100 g in weight.

The 500 PF will need at least a 90mm objective. I suspect that it will be much lighter and thinner than the 400 DO though only 8mm longer.

It will be interesting to see what the actual price will end up on the lens.

Yup, that's why I wrote that I hope it takes standard 95mm filter.

If the weight and price will be in the neighborhood E.J. predicted, then I will be one of the long time Canon shooters switching over.
The used market might be flooded by then with Canon 500 Mark II and 600 Mark II lenses and Canon cameras as well.
It will be difficult to sell, though.

I was pretty much right on for size, weight and filter thread but badly missed the price which is a very good thing :)

Well at a $3,600 price and 3.2 pounds, I am pleasantly surprised!! Ordered one last night, hope it is good as the 300mm f/4 PF and Nikon can fill all the orders in a timely way that I would expect that they will get! (Though looks like the going rate for my used 500mm f/4 G is about that price)

I am interested in this lens as well. I would prefer the 600f 5.6 but who knows when that will show up. Grrrrr...

Agree BIG TIME on the 600 f5.6! No idea (again) what Nikon was thinking. Everyone has different opinions and needs, but I for one cannot understand why anyone would pay 3x the cost for the new 500 f5.6 over the Nikon 200-500. I doubt the Nikon PF will be any sharper. I have the 300 PF and it is not sharper than my 200-500 and possibly even less sharp. Plus you get the advantage of the usefulness of a zoom. The only reasons I see for getting the 500 PF over the zoom might be weight, size and faster AF. But those features would have to be worth paying 3x the cost for. I can only assume the AF will be snappier with the new 500 over the 200-500. Now if it was a 600 f5.6 I would be all over it in a heartbeat. :)  I can only hope Nikon reads these threads.

The MTF curves show the new lens to be very much sharper than the 200-500 and much more inline with the 500 f/4E than the 200-500.  Scroll down in this link for the MTF comparison:
https://nikonrumors.com/2018/08/24/nikon-500mm-f-5-6e-vs-500mm-f-4e-vs-200-500mm-f-5-6e-specifications-comparison.aspx/

The new lens also weighs a lot less than the zoom.

Also hoping it will acquire focus faster than the 200-500mm lens?  Not sure if this is realistic.  But will definitely appreciate the loss of weight.

I actually would expect it to be dramatically faster to acquire focus but that is conjecture on my part.

can't help feeling that this lens will end up in many, many travel bags... MTF curves look super good.  weight is good, and that price point is about £200 less than I first anticipated...
Make your life spectacular!
