Updates to already excellent lenses but no longer the best in the world, this will likely take back the mantle or at least tie.  The 70-200 f/4 looks very interesting as the old lens was no longer up to today's standards.

The revamped 70-200/4L IS II is interesting and looks awesome technically.
Await a full review soon ...

All we need now is a better EOS body with better image sensor and so on.

yes, it appears to be the more interesting of the two new lenses.  Tests will tell but I'm guessing the 2.8 will not be that much of an improvement.

You might be surprised if you are shooting with a very high megapixel camera.  When the 70-200L II came out, it was the best 70-200 on the market and i thought it was the pinnacle of what a lens like that can achieve.  Then came the Nikon 70-200E and the Sony 70-200 GM and I was blown away by how much better those lenses are.  The Canon 70-200 II was/is a great lens in the 24 megapixel regime but it does not hold up to scrutiny compared to those other two when you get up into the 32-50mp regime.  I just recently had a Canon 70-200 II and Nikon 70-200E mounted on a 42mp a7R III and the difference in very fine detail was remarkable.  Canon had to respond!

However, if the optical design of the f2.8 III actually remains unchanged compared to the II as it's stated in Canon's official release infos and promo video, it will probably make no sense to spend the money for the upgrade unless you urgently need the improved flare elimination they claim. I guess the new coating solely has no real impact on the sharpness and detail rendering except for the perception with backlit shots. But maybe there are undocumented changes :?: In fact it's hard to believe that they will leave the field to the competition for this widely used pro lens.

There might be more changes in the f4 II. That said, I'm happy with my v1 so far. It's extremely sharp - even on the 5DsR.

Coatings can make a big difference in detail rendering. The 70-200 II, which is an excellent lens despite what I wrote above, came out before the recent advent of highly sophisticated nano-coatings. Some of the latest lenses get much of their improvement from new coatings and coating techniques.
