I recently purchased a 100-400 Sony G lens and using it with a 6300, but I would like to use the lens on the A7rlll-thus the thought of adding an extender for extra reach. This would also give me added reach with the 6300. Question,is the extender worth the money?

Here is a nice thread on FM about the 2x...there are many threads on the 1.4

Lots of these A9 shots are with the 1.4

The extenders work great, I wouldn't hesitate to use the 1.4x on the A7R3. The 2x is surprisingly good as well. The AF takes a big hit with the 2X on the A7R3, but sharpness is good and the AF is accurate given enough time to lock on(no phase detect available on the A7R3, unlike the A9).

I don't understand your A9 comment?  The A9 can also lock AF focus at f11.

I meant that the A9 has phase detect AF at f11, whereas the A7R3 does not.

I'm not a tester but have been pleased with results from the 100-400, 1.4X and A7r3

Echo the previous comments. I have been very pleased with the 1.4. The high iso performance of the cameras allow you to get shutter speeds to stop action.

I was surprised at how well the 2x performs if you have enough light.

I shoot both the A9 and A73.

I’m getting awful vignetting when using the 1.4 with the 100-400.
Very unhappy and on the verge of sending it back.
Strangely enough there no vignetting when using the same combo with the A7r3.
I have spoken to Sony UK and to date hav3nt received any worthwhile feedback.
Has anyone else experienced similar?

You didn't say what camera you are getting the vignetting with?

David,

Check out this thread and scroll down to a picture of some birds against a sky posted with the same combination by a user named "babur" - does yours look like this or worse?

I love my 1.4x TC. It is much smaller, lighter and sharper than the Canon TC which I almost never used as the trade-off with sharpness was too much for me. Even the 2X is very much usable. Yes, there is vignetting and it is noticeable, but I almost always crop into my image and compose the shot for cropping the corners in such a situation.

As a TC is only used to provide extra reach and hopefully maintain the same sharpness, the Sony version does a remarkable good job. In fact it is hard to tell that at TC was used, the images are so good.

So far I've only used it with the 100-400 lens. But I've tried it on the A9 (most of the time), the A7R3 and the a6500. Naturally, there is almost no vignetting on the small APS-C sensor.

Overall, I am very pleased with the 1.4X TC, it is a great combo with the 100-400 lens.

Apologies EJ.
My vignetting is worse than the examples shown. I’m thinking there’s a problem with my A9 body.

In the full frame airplane shot with the darkened corners, he mentions that he did some shadow lifting so the example shown may not show the full extent of the vignetting. I find there is some vignetting with the A7R3 using the 1.4x. Not enough to bother me, but interestingly, I think the vignetting is less when using the 2x.
The performance of that lens with both converters is stunning in my opinion. I thought the new Canon was the best, but I think the Sony is a step above it.

Thanks for your thoughts Scott.
Interesting in that with my A9 I consider it unacceptable. I’ve actually now been offered a replacement body but I’m not sure I want it!
