Hi,
While i have my camera back pack for my really valuable gear, lenses, camera bodies etc, I am seeking a good piece of hardcore luggage that can move well in the airport and fit my tripod, and all my other smaller gear, tripod head, etc. Inside my current luggage which is now falling apart I also put my clothes which I often use to wrap around a landscape lens, etc.

I was wondering what all of you travel with for luggage, used for stuff other than just clothes.

If you can recommend a good solid piece of luggage it would be most appreciated.

Thanks so much

James

One word: weight.
It's easy to end up with a quarter to a third of the checked luggage allowance taken up just by the case.
My current suitcase is a little on the heavy side at 3 1/2 kg, but it's lasted eight years so far. Soft sided, generic looking so it doesn't draw attention, with rollers and handle, though getting a little scuffed.
I've never had any problem with gear in it, always wrapping tripods in clothes.
A light case means I am usually two to three kg under the allowance and so my backpack is ignored. That's a good thing.

I recently found myself in this exact situation. I just today received my replacement choice which is an Eagle Creek Tarmac 29. Just unpacked and looked it over and it seems that it will be a very good replacement for my large Lands' End roller that has been all over the world and now worn out. I usually carry my 28" Gitzo tripod and Wimberly gimbal as well as a bag of miscellaneous photo gear plus clothes. I think this new one will work fine for this.

It's a little heavy but it holds everything I need to carry for a week in Yellowstone in the winter along with a couple of tripods and the CF lens hoods for the 400 and 800. It's a big bag....

Hey, you asked... :)

I use the older 5.11 mission ready. Holds a lot of stuff.

I put my gear in a thinktank roll aboard for going on plane. It is packed so if I have to I can valet check it plane side. I don't think I can pack a backpack such that I would be comfortable with valet checking is forced to do it.

For checked luggage, I've used the mountainsmith and eagle creek duffel bags. Regular soft sided luggage tumi has held up well as what I'm currently using is 15 years old. Most of my duffels get wrecked when someone drags them across the tarmac which acts like sand paper. The eagle creek rolling duffel (rollers) holds up better than the mountainsmith (no rollers) but weighs more. Outdoorgearlab has a review of duffels. I've always found them to be a good source for reviews.

In packing the duffel, I use my camera backpack (lowe pro or gura gear) and kinesis lens bag to pack more fragile items I don't carry on. The Camera bags are then buried in the duffel surrounded by clothes. The legs of my tripod are permanently covered with pipe insulation and tape and I put them in the duffel last.

I do feel the tumi is more secure but as others point out wt is a big factor.

I have a couple of things from 5.11 (not luggage) and they are made of strong material and well built.

Have Fun,
