After seeing the superb flight shots in Alan Murphy’s latest workshop email I’d like to have a go myself.

Is there a commercial broken beam trigger out there for Nikon pehaps?

I could make my own using the Nikon MC-22 but time is always against me. I have ready access to all manner of industrial photo sensors so I’m covered in that regard. I would really prefer to just buy one though.

Any recommendations?

I have one of these. Very basic but it does work. I would not want to use it in wet conditions though. You can buy different cables for different cameras too.

By far the best and most sophisticated is the Sabre by Cognisys. It uses IR LIDAR, so you don't have to have the reflector allowing you to do things like point the beam straight up. https://www.cognisys-inc.com/products/sabre/sabre.php It will also trigger flashes instead of your camera so you could do high speed trigger for hummingbirds etc.

You might also look at the Pluto. It has a infrared sensor /trigger, and also comes with a laser beam trigger. Much less money than the Sabre. I haven't used mine in the field yet so can't offer first hand experience.

That looks like a very reasonable device. I'll contact them about the range of the laser trigger.
