Leaving very soon to minus 50 degrees in Canada to photograph Polar Bears. I have been using for distance a 7D2+1.4X3 on a 600mm first version. I have also used a 5D4 . The 5D4 Quality totally surpasses the 7D2. Spoiled me!
The question is how does a 7D2+600mm+1.4X3 compare to a 5D4+2X version 3, +same 600mm lens as above.Image Quality?

The difference in Crop factor for this combination is 1344 for the 7D2 combination against 1200 for the 5D4 combination. I lose 144mm perspective with the 5D4 combination..
I understand I lose  ONE stop of light with the 5D4 combination, BUT, Arash in his 5D4 manual says I can shoot the 5D4 at 3200.
Since white has no luminance noise, 1600Iso works for the 7D2 combination..So that I am even Iso wise with the 5D4...
I understand the 5D4 combination will not focus as well..I can switch for static shots to live view..

CHEERS!

The 5DM4 combination focuses well, (I use 500 II. 2.0x III)
You are able to use all the focus points.
Also it works well at ISO 3200.
Some noise that you can easily control in DPP.
Using the right exposure of course becomes more critical at high ISO.
Take both cameras just in case.

I had both of those cameras and that 600. I’m no tester but I’d take the 5D4 in a heartbeat.

I have the 7D2 and 5D3 and I have the 600 V2.  I was just up there in November for polar bears and I can say without hesitation that the 5D4 is the hands down choice.  The days are short and you will likely experience low light situations.  The 5D4 is a much more versatile body for low light.  Due to noise issues my 7D2 only comes out on sunny days.  Ignore the crop and stick with what will give you the best possible images.   The possibility of getting a good shot with a 2.0 converter, even if the combo has been micro adjusted, is an iffy proposition. It's an expensive venture and I wouldn't want to risk it's success with a 2.0 converter.

Given the temperatures and the limited ability to make equipment changes in the field, it would be my advice to leave your compound with the 5D4/600 and have the 1.4 in your pocket if the need arises.  You will experience brain freeze due to the conditions, so make things in the field as simple as possible.  Good luck and bring foot warmers as well as hand warmers.

Mark me down as another vote for the 5D4 for reasons stated above.

Another vote for the 5D4. I envisage, on such trips both low light and a need for higher DR with snow and sun. The 5D4 at ISO's up to 800 or 1600 can handle some serious highlights. If need be can be underexposed and handle a stop or two of post exposure without extreme noise (not up to the Sony sensors but in a push to save highlights it works). The 7D cannot match either the noise or the DR of the 5D4. My only hesitation is the AF of the 5D4 with bright backgrounds, like snow covered trees, I find it misses and hunts far more than my 1Dx for example. But this should be less of a problem with larger subjects.

On the subject of TC's. I love that the 5D4 can auto focus, and pretty fast, with all points using my 600 (mk1) and 2x TC. The images are more than acceptable too. Not saying it is the greatest combo in the world but you never know when you might need it. Put this way. I much prefer shooting a 600 + 2xTC on the 5D at ISO 3200 than a 600 and 1.4xTC at ISO1600 on the 7D2. I no longer own a 7D2, hated both of the copies I had.
