Sigma announces 14-24 f/2.8 Art lens

Sigma finally announces a true competitor to the very long in the tooth Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 with their new Art series 14-24mm.  It is weather sealed, magnesium bodied and Sigma claims higher than 50 megapixel resolution which the once excellent 14-24 (in the 24 megapixel full frame era) doesn't even come close to.  If this lives up to the standards of most of the other Art lenses, it could be an incredible lens and also finally a lens in this class for canon shooters...

Personal note, I wish that Sigma had integrated 95mm filter threads into the lens hood the way Zeiss does on their 15mm f/2.8.  The Sigma lens will not take filters, at least until somebody like Lee or Nissi comes up with a filter adapter.

This has been a long time coming for Canon shooters :) The filter thing is a niggle, but expected on such a bulbous front element.

Any guess on a price range?

It'll be interesting to see the price. I may have to sell my Nikkor 14-24 and move up if the price is right. Thanks for the post E.J.

If f4 is enough, Canon's 4/11-24 should be a great alternative.

I've never used it but read and heard only good things about its optical performance.

Unfortunately very heavy and expensive. And also hard with filters although there seem to be adapters.

For me in most cases 16mm (like my 4/16-35L IS) is enough. But particularly in forests and mountains, sometimes less focal length would be nice.

But always great to see competition.

I noticed in the link EJ supplied that Sigma will rework the lens hood for VR (virtual reality) shooting. What is this and why is a different hood needed?

Front Mount Conversion Service for Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art
Addressing the rising popularity of multi-camera productions, especially using ultra wide-angle lenses in shooting virtual reality (VR) content, Sigma has introduced its Front Conversion Service. Converting the petal-type hood of the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art to an exclusive round component allows for the lens to be used in various VR scenarios without the risk of interfering with other lenses in the VR rig or undesired shadows in the content.

The availability of this fee-based service for Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 Art will be announced at a later date.

You don't want the side petal from one lens casting a shadow on the bulbous element of the other lens used to create the stereoscopic vision ion a sidelit situation..

I read that it will be heavier than the Nikon 14-24 which already a lump of a lens

I bought the Nikon 14-24 a few years ago to use with my Canon as there was nothing comparable in the Canon line-up at the time (this was before the 11-24 came out). I found it nearly impossible to use despite adapters.

I have moved to Sony over the past two years and was so happy when the 12-24 f4 came out late last year. It is sharp, light and very usable. Smaller than you expect it to be. No easy way to add filters though.

Other than for Astrophotography, I see no reason to have an f2.8 lens in this focal length. And if I need a fast lens, the Sony 16-35 f2.8 is more than adequate.

At this range, even 2mm extra on the wide end makes a huge difference and again, f4 is plenty for most applications.

So while the Sigma is probably a beauty, given the size and no offer in e-Mount yet, would give it a miss.
