Nikon filed a patent for telephoto lenses with a Phase Fresnel (PF) optical element.
They includes 400mm, 500mm and 600mm f/5.6

Hope this will materialize in the foreseeable future.
Guess what their weight would be. Anyone?

It would be awesome if these came to fruition. Unfortunately less than 1 in 10 lens patents that are filed are ever productized. Often they file patents just to stop or slow down another company that might be developing a similar product. By filing the patent it slows them down as they have to re-engineer anything that might be in violation of that patent.

Agree - would be super to have a compact 600mm PF lens.... if the patent transpires into practise.

I currently have an old MF Nikkor 600mm F5.6. It only weighs 6.5 lbs and is about 15" long. The almost F5.6, almost 600mm they describe is about 2" shorter. Of course, the older lens had a built in hood that was wonderful and the new lens needs a focusing motor.

I think that would be great. The 600mm along with a D500 would be a good combo for lots of different scenarios.

As you guys may remember, I have been calling for a 600 f5.6 from Nikon for years now. While the PF version would be cool, my vote would still be for an updated version of the older manual 600 f5.6, to a new AF version. It would still be slightly smaller and lighter than the 500 f4. The 300 f/4 PF is pretty good, but my hopes would be that Nikon would improve upon it a bit more with these new lenses.
