The A9 has a lens upgrade which addresses the zoom lens problem of zooming and losing focus The 70/200 and 100/400 are up-gradable.

A subject moving towards the camera while the photographer is zooming in was about the only place where the a9 focus fell short of the 1Dx2 and D5. if this fixes that then Sony is on essentially equal footing for sports on the body front - need big lenses though!

Would love to see the A9 re-tested against the two big boys after this update, but why they are dragging their feet over the long lenses I cannot fathom.

Long lenses are a halo product...how many A mount shooters anty up for the 300 f2.8 or the 500f4?

So why bring a pro body that can shoot 20fps to market if not for the very photographers (sports) that need those lenses? Are they relying on adapted Canon lenses as a stop gap?

They do state that a 400/2.8 is coming...

I would expect Sony to have the full cadre of lenses in time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Sony has developed only 1 exotic fast prime lens, the 500f4, all others being KM designs (maybe the 500 also).  The 300 and 70/200 were KM but as far as I know the 70/400 was a Sony design.  Obviously, all E mount lenses are Sony design.  edit: Sony interview on SAR about the future

I heard there would be a 400mm coming, did not know it would be f2.8 for sure? (makes sense of course).

Actually, you are right, they did not say f/2.8, that is an internet amplification of what they said and I fell into their trap. But, it wouldn't really make sense for it to be much slower although an f/4 or ideally an f/3.5 version that works well with their 1.4x could be a good match with the a/9.

Any feedback as to whether this solved the problem and actually worked?
Thanks
