Extenders

The aging factor has rendered me less and less anxious to pack around my 500mm f4 on the 7DII, especially if going more than 200 yards from the car. So, I have been using my 100-400 more often. The results are pretty good but not so much if attaching the EX II 1.4 extender. Much slower focusing and not nearly as sharp. Would switching to the EX III improve things or should I begin to consider the Tamron or Sigma 150-600?

I have the EX 1.4 Mark III extender and it doesn't work well on the 100-400 Mark II when I use Canon 7D Mark II.
Since my wife has the same, I tried it on hers and got pretty much the same results so I don't ever use it on the 100-400 lens.
I tried the Mark II and a third party 1.4 extender and none worked well.
On the other hand the 1.4 III extender "glued" on the 500 Mark II lens and it works perfect with the 7D Mark II and the 5D Mark IV as well.
So It's 100-400 lens.

Extenders seem to work well with good primes, for lightness sake, have you thought about a 300 f4 or a 400 f4 DO?

zooms and teleconverters are always a major optical compromise, much more so than with primes. Yes you can do it but it means losing a stop plus you need to stop down another stop to get decent IQ so now you are at f/11 which then means slower shutter speeds and/or higher ISO and on most cameras youa re now well into recording diffraction. So while it is possible to take sharp photos, the odds are really stacked against you.
