Sounds like a very good all-rounder. Thought it would cost more. Not sure about the future of XQD though.

Unlike the EOS 6D, this seems to be a real and serious improvement over its predecessor.
If the IQ is great - which I assume - it'll be the new standard for FF DSLRs, particularly for landscape shooters. But great AF system and 7fps make it very interesting for wildlife as well.

At $3,299.95 MSRP this is priced even lower than the EOS-5D Mk IV ($3,499.00) !
Feeling sorry for Canon users ...

At this price it should be a winner for Nikon. It will replace both my D810 & D500's duties. Too bad Nikon don't price their lenses quite as competitively.

Way better than anything Canon has and that's saying something because the 5Dmkiv is pretty solid but it didn't move the bar like the 850.
I am glad to see Nikon advancing hopefully it puts pressure on Canon.

The crazy thing is that the now "obsolete" D810 is still the second best DSLR on the market.

BTW, the included APS-H like mode with a 1.2x crop provides over 31mp.  So you have the following:
FF ~ 46mp w/ 51 frame buffer
APS-H ~ 31mp w/ 75 frame buffer
APS-C ~ 20mp w/ 117 frame buffer

and with a grip and D5 battery you can shoot them all at 9FPS - that is an incredibly versatile camera!!!

That's my thinking too. With the D500, I'm stuck without APS-H or FX choices. Now I can have all three again without the loss of resolution at APS-C. Then again, the D500 was much cheaper...

Not to mention, yet another new vertical grip.  You probably got the D500 one free...

Pretty certain this bad boy will be ending up in my bag, but also pretty certain it won't be in the first rush either.  Not throwing cold water but I'm not keen on beta testing so have learnt to be happy to wait till the glitches, and expected soft ware updates are worked out.  Either way, it is exciting and looks to be more than enough to carry forward for the next few years.

PS.  The focus bracketing function looks interesting.  There seems to be a lot to look into with the model.   peel one layer and find something else

Wow, I think my D500 fever just went away! I was waiting to see what this camera would  do. Unless of course, Nikon drops the price of the D500 significantly, then the fever may come back while I wait out the first few production runs of the 850.

Sounds like a good upgrade from an 810. Not much written on the battery options. Understand the use of the D5 battery, but those of us with D500s would like to know if the new en-el 15a batteries will work on a D500 or use the same charger. I plan to upgrade and sell one of my d500s sometime early next year, let the first run of cameras and firmware work out any issues, but want to keep a d500 for a backup. I don't relish the thought of having multiple types of batteries, chargers, or having purchasing 2 D850s. I am curious what my wife thinks about 2 new cameras?

This is what caught my eye on the specs.

Automatic Focus Shift and Negative Digitizer Modes
Reaping the benefits of the D850’s high-resolution captures, an Automatic Focus Shift mode expedites working with focus stacking post production techniques by recording up to 300 sequential images within 10 different focus steps while automatically shifting the focus between exposure to achieve a greater depth of field. A dedicated Negative Digitizer mode has also been specifically designed for photographing your film negatives and slides in conjunction with an AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED lens.

And, unfortunately, from what I've read, this process produces 8 mp jpegs only.

I doubt I'll use this mode rather than to take the RAW image and process it in post.
