May be it'd be a combo of D750 + D810 :-)

Got the email this morning. There have also been rumors of a D5x but nothing official yet like the D850.

Here is the Nikon USA announcement of a future announcement ;) page:
https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/announcement-d850-dslr.page?cid=img_en_us:EML:MKT:7252017:na:2017-07-25_100-Anniv-NPS:na:btn:D850&ET_CID=1458365&ET_RID=147178827

And the Nikon USA Press Release:
https://www.nikonusa.com/en/about-nikon/press-room/press-release/j47iarx5/Development-Of-Digital-SLR-Camera-Nikon-D850.html

Literally the only thing they tell you is that it will do 8K video - absolutely no info from Nikon on anything having to do with still photography.

I really dislike being told by Nikon how good it is going to be without any details. They could have shared something besides the video.

Sony is about to release a new camera, just trying to stop the bleeding.

Agreed, this is an epic fail even in the category of announcement of a future announcement

One can speculate on the pixel count with the 8K time lapse video clue.  If they are defining 8K as 7680 pixels wide then the existing Sony 42mp sensor in the a7R Mk II can do that and has been doing it for over 2 years.  If they are referring to 8K as Cinema 8K then the horizontal pixel count is 8192 and it would require a new 45mp sensor.  Of course it could go higher than these pixel counts and deliver either 8K format but it can not be less.

The rumors over the last few weeks have stated 42-45mp, I am hoping the frame rate increase a little over the D810 but wont hold my breathe, I personally do need extra pixels over the D800 but they said it would have better DR than any Canon camera in both high and low ISO and also the D810 , Time will tell

"this is an epic fail even in the category of announcement of a future announcement" Woooah guys! you sound like a bunch of vicious old grouches with nothing better to do than grinch over whats NOT revealed yet!

Whatever it is, it seems to have a higher pixel count than the D810 - thats good.

They seem to be taking their time to produce the goods - which means there is less chance of a rushed job with unforeseen bugs like the D600 etc - thats good too.

So why give them a hard time?

My D810 constantly delights me with its stunning performance - I can wait a little longer knowing it probably means a better ultimate product.

I was talking about the announcement being an epic fail, not the camera.  The point is that they made an announcement that basically tells you nothing other than what we already knew, that one day there will be a replacement for the D810.  The announcement of a future announcement is clearly intended to stop the bleeding away from the brand which has accelerated over the last year.  But if they wanted to generate actual excitement, let us know something more than it does 8K timelapse - who cares if it does 8K timelapse, certainly not 99% of the people that are looking for a D850.

I'm sure it'll be a great camera. The announcement... just a confirmation on the 850 name. MEH. I'm not really in the market to take 8k timelapses...who can display that anyway. Certainly not my cable provider, they can't even deliver 1080p reliably.

My prediction: Professional photography will be dead shortly! Just as high ISO and frame rate has made capturing great images easier, high quality video will allow images to be extracted from footage to give images that are hard to rival with current equipment. Just as Panasonic can produce 8mp images from video (albeit, not highest quality at this time), soon you will see the capability to capture images on video that will approach current still images. Anybody will be able to extract images of exact moments in time that current frame rates can't capture. Higher ISO's will make low light images that stop motion in early and late light, even easier. Who knows what the D850 will bring out, but equipment is taking the skill out of photography quickly, IMO. Even tripods are unnecessary in situations that demanded a solid camera rest previously. Fasten your seat belts!

Just in case nobody remembers, Nikon did the same thing with the D5: making an "announcement" in mid-November 2015 and following up with specs and a release date in early January, 2016. At least we get a video from the D850 and we know there will be a camera "coming soon to a theater near you". ;)

One does have to wonder why Nikon Marketing is "pleased to announce the development" of a camera that started the design process years ago, they could just as well made this announcement the day after the D810 release or anytime since. It's not like they decided yesterday to make a new camera, right? This isn't a big surprise, the D810 is 3 years old and a year past the usual upgrade cycle for prosumer bodies. I guess this is just Nikon's way of saying "Hey guys, we're still here and we're thinking about you". Who knows, Marketing folks live in an alternate universe as far as I can tell.

I guess they had to say something on their official 100th anniversary date and they did. We'll just have to wait a month or so to find out what they're saying.

Bill

Nikon is also developing a serious mirror-less camera:

Well if true, nobody should be complaining about a high-resolution (landscape) + high-speed (sports) camera with a class-leading AF system that actually works! I'm pumped! ;~)
