While out this morning with my D600/300mmF:4 AF the camera quit auto focusing. Once home I checked the lens on my D3 and everything worked. I put a different lens on the D600 and tried to AF and nothing happened. My D3 I put the single sensor on a subject and it turns red. With the D600 I put the single sensor on the subject and it does nothing. Has anyone have an idea of what has happened.

Have you checked to see if you inadvertently changed the AF selector on the front of the body?

Bent or dirty contacts are a common culprit, but here's a tip on another forum:

Thanks Joe . I've cleaned the contacts and the camera still will not react .I've tried my other lens and checked the tightness of the flange screws. I guess the camera is headed to Nikon repair later on.

Yes I did. I shot from 1969 to 2004 with my FTN and F2 and never had a problem in all those years. I shot at 92Deg and -12deg and never once had a problem.
Now these cameras with all their electronics are rarely working correctly. I don't think I'll repair this camera, I'll replace with a D4 or D4sin Aug.

In my experience the problem is usually dirty contacts or a bad battery. If you have not tried another battery, I would try that. And check to make sure the battery door is closed all the way and aligned properly.

I'm sure you've checked all the obvious things but did you accidentally reassign the AF function to the back button or some other button?

I actually put the AF on the AE_L AF_L button to see if it would activate and it did not. I think the AF is toast at this point.

Yup, that is so strange - best to get Nikon to look at it.

Pardon the WAG (wild ass guess), but I would be tempted to reset the body to factory default settings as a last ditch effort, a reboot. Be sure to make note of how you have it set up, so that if this does work you can restore your personal settings back to where you want them.

Hi Robert- I have rebooted the camera twice using both green buttons, I've checked flange screws for proper tightness, I removed the battery, I put AF on the AE_L AF_L button, still no AF, verified the af/m switch is set correctly and lastly I've checked the AF/M switch on the lens and its set correctly. What I have is a manual focus digital camera. I can still down load shots and operate the camera as I had but with no AF.

Maybe with all the Nikon recalls, you can slip it in for free?

Was your D600 sent in to Nikon for the recall to replace the shutter mechanism? If not, send it in for that and they may fix the AF at the same time. When I sent my D600 for that, they also fixed a few other things at no charge to me.

I sent it in a couple of years ago. My D600 will now become a door stop. In Sept I'll get a D4s and a 200~500. Even since a am NPS member and get a 10% saving on repairs I don't think it is worth the cost of repair proceed further.

I suspected you may have tried that but didn't see it mentioned. Bummer.
I did find this on a discussion elsewhere for the very same issue:

"Make sure there isn't an anomalous state set in the cameras status memory: Remove the battery, turn the power switch on for a moment then back off. Reinstall the battery, and try focusing again.
If that doesn't work try reloading the firmware."

That may be worth a try before the door stop finality. Good luck.
