This replaces the previous 70-300 with a new one that incorporates the more reliable fully electronic mount.  The lens it replaces was very good given the economical price.  This one, on paper is better.

A friend of mine has used the 70-300 on a crop sensor Nikon for wild horse photography for several years. He shoots handheld and it has been very impressive. This new version sounds even better, with 4.5 stops image stabilization and closer focusing. Should be great for handheld shooting, especially with the D500.

At NikonUSA, they state there are some camera body limitations for this new lens. Not sure what this means especially for the D 800 series.

"The number of cameras compatible with this lens is limited. Even for compatible cameras, a firmware update may be required. Fully compatible models: D7500, D5600, D3400, D500.

Fully compatible models (without limitations) after available firmware update: D5, D750, D610, D600, D5500, D5300, D3300. Download firmware updates at: http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/index.html

Regardless of firmware update, these models will still have some limitations:* D4, D4S, D3, D3X, D3S, D810, D810A, D800, D800E, Df, D700, D300, D300S, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5200.

*Because these models reset focus when reverting from standby status (timer off), pre-focus shooting is not available.

Incompatible models: D2 series, D1 series, D200, D100, D90, D80, D70 series, D60, D50, D40 series, D5100, D5000, D3200, D3100, D3000, film SLR cameras."

Interesting, I am in the market for a mid zoom before i go back to the Himalayas next year, Choughs come close and have little fear when flying by, 300mm would work well, Not sure about the limitations with the D800E although should have another body by then

Older cameras can't use the E lenses at all as they don't have the electronics in them to use the electronic aperture.
More recent but still older than the current crop aren't set-up for Nikon's implementation of stepper motors - they work just fine, its just when the camera goes to standby and comes back from standby, the focus won't be in the same place where you left it - for the vast majority of uses that won't be a problem.
