Looks like my wife wants to start taking pictures but does not want the hassle of changing lenses like I do all the times and carry a large backpack with equipment, shooting macro and having a zoom would be great. Integrated small flash would also be nice. 

Any advice would be appreciated

Sounds like a perfect candidate for the Sony RX10 line although that may not be compact enough. Otherwise, check out this recent thread:

I purchased the Sony RX10 III, Im impressed for being a point & shoot camera. (makes me wonder why I'm I carrying all this heave gear?) lol.....It is a nice camera!
