Difficult to trust D rings to support weight. I've been using this on the bottom of a camera grip to attach the strap..it's indestructible.
Maybe works for you.

If a lot of strength is required and foldability is not, this is what I would use:

Shoulder eye bolt

It would have to be shortened (not hard to do) or washers added for a camera, so as not to damage the camera because of the length, but may work for other equipment.
