I am again pondering the purchase of a 70-300 lens and just spotted the 70-400 lens. Any thoughts on the 70-400 lens?

If you are referring to E-mount, there is no 70-400, that is an A-mount lens. if you are referring to A-mount, it's a good lens. Not quitre at the level of the Canon 100-400 but very good and certainly better than the Nikon 80-400...

I just finished looking at a review and didn't realize this is an A mount. Would be nice for the E mount and it has a tripod collar. I guess I am back to the 70-300 lens.

I had a feeling that you might have been looking at the A-mount as an E-mount lens ;)  For what it's worth, there have been rumors of a 100-400 coming in the future but I doubt they would do that until the next generation of bodies as the AF performance suffers with the current AF system on long focal lengths.

Excuse me...everyone knows that at 70mm, the Sony beats the pants off of the Canon.
