What a joke!  The mismanagement of this company is starting to become very concerning...

It is not a joke, it is reality.  More concerning than dropping a potential losing line like the NIKON 1 is the problems with their stepper business which was Nikon's lifeline out of the slowing commercial photography market.  I wonder if Sony is going to throw them a rescue ring like they did with Olympus.  After all Sony needs Nikon to stay viable so they can sell sensors.  I wonder if some of the DL's have been made or do you think Nikon will run a D9 cat over them?

This is a shock to me. All companies must innovate or they die, in strategic terms. Successful companies that innovate can have development and product failures, but they learn from them. This press release from Nikon does not make me feel comfortable that they understand innovation and what is required for future success for a company in their business. And here I am will all of my photographic assets in the Nikon camp.

My "joke" comment was an attempt at sarcasm.  As for their semiconductor sector, they went from a position of dominance in photolithography steppers in the 1990's to almost no market share as they were out engineered, out marketed, and basically out serviced (from a product support standpoint), by the Netherland's ASML.  I watched, when at Intel, with each new technology node, the use of Nikon steppers went from all layers to only the most basic and technically unchalenging layers while the ASML steppers did the heavy lifting of serious photolithograhy - what a joke!  Nikon is in serious trouble as a company.  It is unlikely that Japan will allow an iconic Japanese brand like this to fail but I expect huge changes across the board and perhaps even being acquired (Like Minolta/Sony, Pentax/Ricoh).

I agree, this is such terrible management in a shrinking marketplace that acquisition looks increasingly inevitable.

The 18-50 DL would have been an awesome product.

I'm carrying a Sony 5100 + Samyang 12/2 to cover the niche of (coat)pocketable ultrawide - but far larger than the DL would have been.

Several surveys as well as pre-orders indicated that the 18-50 DL was going to be a spectacular success, at least in the USA.  Something doesn't smell right with the cancellation of these cameras.

While the cancelling of the DL may be expected....The rest is worrisome news....the times are indeed a changing....let's hope they survive.... too much invested in Nikon gear to switch radically.

I'm generally not a Tony Northrup fan but he makes some excellent points about and to Nikon in this video (and much of it applies to Canon as well). Just ignore the BS he repeats in most of his videos that FF lenses are less sharp than cropped lenses...

The Northrup video makes points that are valid to all camera manufacturers.

Could you really, through averaging, create an ISO1 option?
