Sony has just introduced a new 100mm f/2.8 portrait lens with apodization element which defocuses the background and a budget oriented 85mm f/1.8 portrait lens...

And here is a good video explaining the effect of an apodization element...

Still missing those 300-500 E-mount lenses, and with cameras like the A6500 able to shoot sport I find that a real shame.

The AF system in the current crop of cameras does not perform well enough above 300mm to give a good enough user experience on the types of subjects that one photographs with long lenses such as sports and wildlife.

Is that a weakness of the on sensor AF or small battery?

Which is why the A-mount cameras are not yet dead I guess.

Not a lot of wildlife and sports photographers using Sony though...

Nature shooters (especially floral) should be drooling over that 100stf (my favorite lens is the 135 stf)

A lot of lenses missing and the Pro Service, Sony cameras are certainly starting to include features needed by us and the sports shooters.

Sony has a Pro service that works relatively well. I am a member.

I'm more excited by the 100 STF than any lens announcement in ages.

The look for any nature images where bokeh appears is absolutely unique to the Minolta / Sony 135 and, now, the new Sony. I've looked at other apodization filter images, head to head, and they aren't even in the same ball park.

For nature images, not that many usages for 100mm or 85mm unless it's a macro lens I'd say.

The 100mm with it's apodization element has potential for serious flower photographers - otherwise it's really a portrait lens.

Flowers individually and en masse, fall foliage isolation images, spring forest images, and telephoto landscapes are all candidates for this lens.

I knew. Flower photographs were what I had in mind in my prior response. I have lenses of about 100mm myself but they're also macro lenses and I shot flowers with them as well. Sure, you can photograph anything with a 100 mm or 85mm lens but one that are also for macro shots are more versatile.

Yes they are getting their act together but I was more referring to the presence at major sporting events, Canon has a huge amount invested in parts and engineers.

They do but it is primarily on the video side.
