1.  Why is the D810A  not recommended also for general photography use?

2.  Wondering if anyone here has one and loves astrophotography.  Want to live part of the remainder of my time here,  in high desert and would love to be under those stars at night.

1. The D810A is 4 times as sensitive to 656nm light than other wavelengths. 656 is red and in the visible spectrum. Sure you can use it for daylight photography but expect reds to be overpowering.

2. Look in the Landscape gallery - there are some people posting astro shots now and then.

During the day, the D810A when color balanced produces very similar images to the D810. With a high powered ND filter, most of which are not really designed to block the upper red frequencies, the image shifts very much to red. On the other hand, I never did try to color balance the camera with those filters on so it might be that easy to produce similar images to the D810.

At night, for the stars, the camera doesn't limit the colors which makes for more interesting sky images. Also, in theory, if you have a hydrogen-alpha filter for solar photography, the D810A allows for a much higher shutter speed.

I regularly use the D810A in Botswana for daytime images. The D810A's lowest numbered ISO is 200 where the D810's lowest is 64.

I guess I'll be quite happy with the D810 :)

Thanks you E.J. and Tony.

Yes, I am going to peak at those astro shots now.
