Hello everyone!!!

Officially my 5D Mark III is R.I.P. so I am looking for a new Camera (right now I am shooting with the old 7D) and I am thinking about which could be the best choice right now since there is not a big difference in the price between the New Canon 5D Mark IV and the Canon 1DX.

Thanks for your opinions in advance.

Cheers!!!

This is actually a hard choice :) Although I would like to move to a 5D4 I would never sell my 1Dx to get it, the 1Dx is a tough camera, with great IQ and it is fast. The AF is top notch, although I have yet to see how the 5D4 performs.

But the 5D4 has much improved dynamic range, noise wise looks very much the same as the 5DIII (with more resolution), so I am guessing down scaling to 18MP would give similar results to the 1Dx at higher ISO's. Also brings 4K video, live view AF, Wifi etc. If you need those then the choice is easier. :)

Hi Jeff,

I just had this same dilemma. I have had a 1DIV for about 4 years but wanted a full frame camera and a crop camera for birding. The main goal was better dynamic range for landscapes and such - so 5DIV or 1DxII. I also wanted to have two bodies (a lot of wants:)) since I shoot senior photos and some weddings here and there.

In the end I was going to get a 5DIV and keep the 1DIV (or get a 7DII) for the crop but ended up finding a barely used 1DXII (with <3K on the shutter) for a "good" price. So now I will sell the 1DIV and get the newer extenders and have one body:) and borrow a body if I need to for weddings. Ultimately, the shooting speed, buffer and sensor improvements were a deciding factor. I have used a 1DX a few times and it was great also but the dynamic range improvement of the !DXII was important. The extra 2K or so was a lot and hard to say it was worth it -

Hi Jeff,

ISO performance       Image Size   Frame Rate
1DX II:   3207             20.2 MP       14 fps
1DX:      2786             18.1 MP       12 fps
5D IV     2995             30.4 MP        7 fps

The way I see it is, if you need to crop substantially time to time, than the 5D IV. (30.4 MP)
If you are mostly into BIF, then 1DX. (12 fps)
If I had the money, I would go for the 5D IV as it suits my shooting style more.

Pretty much depends on what you shoot and how you like to shoot it. the two cameras are intended for different markets so without that information one can not make an informed recommendation.

The 5D iv is a generalists camera.  Does everything well but nothing as well as a specialist camera.  Not the fine detail of a 5DsR for landscapes etc and not the high frame rate, ISO, and presumably AF of the 1DXII for sports, birds in flight, and gymnasiums. On the other hand, the 5Div has better AF, higher ISO, and frame rate than 5DsR and more pixels than the 1DxII as well as other advantages. I'm wrestling with the same issues among the three bodies available.  If 7fps is enough for you (and it is for me) and you are primarily interested in sports or birds in flight, I'd wait for some more reviews from people you trust, who do youe kind of photography, giving their impression of the AF and usable ISO of the 5DmarkIV compared to the 1DXII.  I'm looking for reviews based on in the field work not "laboratory" type testing and Raw not Jpg.  The AF system is the same as the 1DXII but I would GUESS not as fast due to things like processing speed. On the other-hand it should be as good or faster than the 7DII. The DXO rating of the ISO leads me to wonder how much different the usable ISO will really be compared to the 1DXii with Raw files.  We may not be giving up much for those extra pixels. I'd wait a month for some of these issues to become more clear.

As EJ says, it would also help to have a clearer idea of what you photograph.

I just realized I read this wrong.  I would think that the 1Dx vs 5Dmark IV is much closer when looking at AF, ISO, and frame rate.  The pixel advantage of the 5D4 greater.  I would suspect I would go with 5D4.  Usable high ISO of 1Dx and !Dx are supposedly very similar.

I have not tried this for the 5Dmk4 vs 1DxmkII but I did download 1Dx and 5Ds RAW (ISO3200) files from DPR, processed them in ACR (with a little more NR in the 5Ds file), then re-sampled the 5Ds file down to 18MP. The results were surprisingly similar, apart from a slight magenta cast in the 5Ds file (which also had more detail). I do think from the DxO results that similar would be true if scaling down a 5D4 file to 1DxII resolution. So I do not think it is worth worrying about high ISO between cameras of differing resolution on the same sensor size.

It all comes down to speed, build and battery life. ;) and little feature like WiFi etc..

Canon did a great job with the new 5D, I have a 1dx now but I am probably going to sell it and get the 5D.
