I'm considering picking up a D810 and was just wondering, is there an upcoming update on the camera since it has been out for a while now.  Not interested in crazy rumors, but is there any defiitive info out there I should be aware of?

Hi Bill,

I recently bought one (June) and I'm so glad I did - now my only regret is that I didn't get it two years ago.

I bought it second hand as I had a D800 already and I wanted a second body.

All the reviews I read seemed to advise that the D810 wasn't worth upgrading to if you were already using a D800.

WOW - how wrong they are!!

Pretty much every aspect of the camera has been upgraded and vastly improved - the AF, the processing engine, the quieter shutter, right down to the overall feel of it with the grip improvement...

But above all, the image sharpness is stunning compared even to the D800!

I photograph birds, and with the D810 the feather barb detail can occasionally introduce moire effects in small areas, but nothing the moire control brush in PS6 cant very easily and quickly deal with.

So go to a reputable dealer and look for a reconditioned or lightly used second hand one. Only Nikon know when they will upgrade, maybe in time for Photokina later this year? Or maybe in 2017/18 some time?

Nikon rumors is the website to watch.

Nothing on the rumor mill yet... as the D500 and D5 are justifiably hogging the limelight!

Cheers
John

Hi Bill, on NSN we try to stay as much away from rumors as possible because it tends to cause a lot of conflict and most of them tend to be working.  There are rumor sites and they generally have a pretty poor track record until literally a day or two before the actual announcement.  Having said that, here is an article  regarding this subject that you might find interesting from Thom Hogan's site:

Also, see PM.

On reflection, you are right about the rumor sites EJ.
As far as predictions go their successes are few and far between, they do score as news scavengers though, hounding out latest announcements and special deals going etc.
Nikon is almost as leak proof as Apple these days!

EJ had one for sale not too long ago... ;)

As for rumors I've heard that announcements are due at the end of August, and early September for Photokina.

Here's a buying guide that might help make some decisions, or at least show you when refreshes might be due.

Sensor availability continues to be an issue after the earthquakes in Japan. A lot of announcements are being delayed and even those cameras that are being announced face long delays before availability. Some products have even been cancelled.

Thanks Wade. I did purchase E.J's D810 for a very reasonable price. The only reason I was asking about the possibility of something new coming out was that I figured the D810 prices would drop if there was a new model coming out. Right now my budget couldn't quite handle a new D810 much less a new model. I'm very happy with the deal I got.
