These settings have worked for me very well. Took a while but looks really good for bif.
CF III Autofocus/Drive: These are the ones that count other areas are probably not going to effect the AF so much.

All settings default except:
2. Medium slow
8. 2
10. 3
The big one for me was CFIII-5. I have always used 1. Focus search off but have found that Focus search on is much better.

Good luck!

Have you used C.Fn III -11, or "Switch to registered AF point"? I used it the other day to frame an eagle in a tree. When he flew, I was able to switch immediately to the center point. I also used C.Fn III -8 set to 2. Later I tried to focus on a couple of geese at the bottom right 1/3 point, but the focus wasn't sharp. I think it was locking on something close by, so I only used that function when I was specifically doing BIF.

Thanks so much. They have all been a mystery to me and I felt like I was playing the lottery....trying to get the right combination. I'll try these....if I can ever get back out again.

Have you guys seen the 1D Mark IV Custom Function Guide that is floating around? It is very helpful on this stuff. What's the etiquette for posting links on the forum?

Thanks for the info Rob!

The other feature of this camera that I think is nifty is the ability to have full control of the flash from the camera itself, even while in manual flash mode. Comes in handy when using a flash in a blind, or trying to minimize visible movement.
