I have a Sony Alpha A9 II (ILCE-9M2) that at random times will move the focus area location from that which I have selected to a different location.  For example, I have set my focus area to Tracking: Flexible Spot-Small and registered it to the center focus location.  The camera will frequently move the focus location from the center spot I have selected and move it, often to a location on the left edge of the viewfinder.  This happens most often while handholding the camera, but also while the camera is on a tripod.  It happens sometimes when the camera is reactivated from sleep mode, but most frequently while powered up and being handheld.

Thanks for any suggestions.

What may be happening, if you are using one of the custom program dial modes (1, 2 or 3) is that when you saved that mode, this was where the AF point was.  The camera then goes to sleep while you were waiting and when you wake it up, it goes to the default programmed position.  If that's it, just move it to the center and re-save your custom shooting mode..  If it isn't that, then you may need to look at how you handle and interact with the camera.  Maybe your thumb or something else is hitting the joystick moving it to that position.  Since you said it tends to happen when hand holding, I'm guessing your thumb is hitting the focus point joystick as you handle the camera without realizing it.  I noticed doing that myself when I have gloves on and carrying the camera around.

You also might check to see if Touch Tracking of the LCD might have been activated.

This is exactly what turns out to be my issue.  I received a helpful, if not somewhat cryptic, response from my query on the Sony support website.  I turned off Touch Operation and my mystery problem was solved.

Yes. The Sony A9 II has been wonderful, except for this little sidetrack.

Thanks,
